As a pioneer in the field, Xplore Bhutan has been instrumental in shaping adventure travel in the Kingdom, setting new benchmarks for quality, safety, and experience. Alongside its strong foundation in adventure travel, the company also specializes in bespoke luxury journeys—crafting immersive experiences that combine comfort, authenticity, and access to Bhutan’s most exceptional landscapes and cultural encounters. The Founder

The Founder

Xplore Bhutan was founded in 2004 by Ugyen “Yougs” Dorji, a passionate outdoorsman with a pioneering vision for adventure travel in Bhutan. What began as a small, homegrown venture quickly earned a loyal following, growing steadily through word of mouth and the authenticity of the experiences he created. For 14 years, Yougs led the company with unwavering dedication, laying a strong foundation rooted in integrity, exploration, and a deep love for the country.

Following his passing in January 2019, the responsibility of carrying Xplore Bhutan forward fell to his wife, Kunzang Chhimi. Despite having little prior experience in the travel industry, she stepped into the role with remarkable courage and determination. Under her leadership, the company not only endured but achieved significant milestones, including spearheading one of its most ambitious international film collaborations, Pole to Pole with Will Smith. Kunzang led with resilience and heart, sustaining the company through challenges until her passing in February 2025.

Today, Xplore Bhutan is guided by a close-knit team led by the founders’ three children. Building on the values and vision instilled by their parents, they are committed to carrying the legacy forward—honoring the past while shaping the future of the company with the same spirit of passion, authenticity, and excellence.
